The Camera You have With You

Gull Wing │ NEX-7 + Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* E24mm F1.8 ZA │ 24mm F4.0 1/1600s ISO100I was running some errands this morning when the sun broke through the clouds. It didn't last long, just long enough to grab a few shots. Although I hadn't left the house with the intention of taking photos, I did have the NEX-7 with me. It was clipped to my belt in a small pouch (Lowepro Apex 100 AW). For me, any camera and lens combination that's larger and heavier than the NEX-7 with the E 24mm F1.8 prime (575g) is impractical to carry this way and gets left at home more often than not. If I'm not really heading out specifically to take photos, then I don't want my camera gear to get in the way.

Abandonned │ NEX-7 + Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* E24mm F1.8 ZA │ 24mm F4.0 1/250s ISO640Most enthusiast level, mirrorless cameras weigh between 400 and 600 grams with a prime lens and will fit into the same Lowepro pouch. My somewhat larger and heavier Panasonic GH2 will fit into the same pouch when the Lumix 20mm F1.7 pancake is mounted to it (550g). The new Panasonic GX1 weighs only 420g with the same pancake lens, but will become bulkier when you attach the external EVF (455g). But if I need the lightest kit possible, I leave the house with the - admittedly somewhat less capable - Sony E16mm pancake lens on the NEX-7. That creates a very compact and light kit weighing only 420g. And that's pretty amazing for a camera with a large sensor, tilting screen and an integrated EVF.

Beautiful images Bjorn! I completely agree about "the camera you have..." and anything larger than my nex with the zeiss 24mm or the nikon v1 and 30-110 is too large for me as well (unless going out with the intention of shooting). Great blog!!

Thanks!
I'd like to hear more about your Nikon V1. Why do you have it and when would you take it along and leave the NEX at home?

Chase Jarvis said it be the "best camera is the one that you have with you.." and I will add - even if it is your iPhone. Day to Day - it is either the X1 or Nex 5N with great glass is what is in my back pack.

Enjoy!

5N and CV 35/2.5. Not as nice as the Biogon but a tiny setup that's incredibly easy to carry around everywhere. Great light in those pics!

The Nex5 and V1 are my two main 'out and about' cameras. I use the nex when shooting in low light, or wanting to create a shallow DoF. And I like to shoot with the V1 if I need fast autofocus, or a longer 'reach' (the nikkor 30-110 is the equivalent of 81-297mm and still 'pocketable'. It's a great combination!

That makes a lot of sense; a smaller sensor for more telephoto reach and a large sensor for low light & shallow DOF work. Combined with the fast autofocus, I can see how the two cameras would complement one another. But as tempting as that may be, the last thing I need at the moment is yet another camera ;-)
