Sunset at Juhu

Chat Room │ GH2 + Leica 45mm F2.8 │ 45mm F2.8 1/800s ISO160Juhu beach seems to be mostly popular with locals as it's far north of central Mumbai...or maybe it just seems far because of the dense and lively traffic. The beach was packed with groups, some standing in the waves. Whether in the water or not, all except a few teenage boys were fully dressed. The girls dancing in the waves noticed me taking a photo from the shore and came in so they could pose for a group portrait. Then they even thanked me.

I haven't taken photos of people lately, so I need to become comfortable with the subject matter again. Also, when I first arrive in a new country, I worry about offending people by taking their photos; by intruding into what is their (perhaps different) definition of personal space. Obviously the girls who offered to pose for me enjoyed the interaction. But I'm not sure that's always true.

Nice! I'm jealous!!! I did about 6 weeks in India in 2001 right after 9/11 but stayed in the North, ie. Rajasthan, Delhi, Dharamsala, Varanasi, Darjeeling and Kolcutta. Don't miss Varanasi or Banares (can't remember which is correct)

Just returned from a month in Mexico trying out a new backpack, etc. and wanted to see what I could do with just an iPhone for shooting, editing, and posting from the road. Still a few more posts to go since I got behind due to lack of wifi toward the end: http://www.kaleidoscopeofcolor.com/mexico-2011

Hope to go to either Colombia/Ecuador OR Bolivia within a couple months and may just take an LX5 or XZ-1. Haven't decided but I really want to minimize gear carried. I'm envious of your GH2, but I'm so tired of carrying so many gadgets, accessories, and lenses. The iPhone only was a good experiment, but I think I want at least an advanced compact for the next one.

Enjoy India! I would like to go back sometime and do the South next time. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Cheers,

Skip

Hi Skip, the wifi hasn't always been brilliant around here either; sometimes it's quite a struggle to get a post up with endless waiting while a page loads. We're in a small "home stay" in the blue city in Rajasthan now; I'll check your site once we're in the IT city of Trivandrum; they'll hopefully have fast internet there. I know what you're saying about travelling lightly with just an LX camera: although the GH2 is great, my kit is heavier than I prefer and I spend time fiddling with lens changes. That's a pain. But on the flip side, I have a staggering range from 14mm to 600mm (equivalent). No pain, no gain ;-)

I hear ya, but I didn't miss carrying gear on my last trip. I like what your're getting though. Very nice.

I hired a driver and did ALL of Rajasthan when I was there. Carried 35mm on that one since it was waaaaay back in 2001. ;-) Loved the feel of Udaipur. Also loved Pushkar. Didn't get sick as long as I didn't eat meat.

Have fun!

Namaste,

Namaste, Skip. Boy that's ambitious to do all of Rajasthan. We'll be doing just Jodhpur. But that seems to have been a good choice; very vibrant. Touch wood, we haven't been sick yet either. Nor do we miss the meat. Cheers

Keep shooting even if you get desensitized and feel like you're getting repetitive. There's so to shoot there you might be tempted to slow down. Don't! Keep shooting non-stop... you'll be finding gems from this shoot for the next year at least!

Have a street samosa and masala chai tea for me!

Namaste

Those are some wise words of advice. The constant bombardment on the senses will take a toll. Yes, I'll probably discover some "gems" later, if only because the screen on my laptop is so poor. But that's not what you mean of course ;-) As to the food, that's fantastic; no meat since we arrived. Masala Chai and Samosas included. Cheers from India, Skip.
