Die Mannschaft

Die Mannschaft │ GF1 + Lumix 20mm F1.7 │ 20mm F5.6 1/640s ISO100If you weren't competing in today's European Championship Dragon Boat races, then it was a superb day to relax in the sun. I didn't have a telephoto to capture the frantic activity in the middle of the wide rowing lake, so I trained my camera on other subjects. The ring of athletes and their shadows was formed by the German team during their warm up exercises.

Die Mannschaft: Very strong composition - terrific photograph!

Someone, somewhere, once commented that a good photo becomes a great one if you just wait 50 years. It has to do with people being naturally attracted to vintage black and white photographs of bygone days. My initial reaction to the ring of rowers doing warm-ups was just that. I didn't really focus on the text. What I saw was an old photograph of people in old-fashioned bathing suits engaged in some pre-swim ritual. I found it very interesting and nicely composed. Only on closer inspection did I realize it was modern day. Very nice.

Reese, that's a very insightful comment that makes me think about the photo in a completely different way. I hadn't thought about the implications that a B&W photo could have in terms of suggesting that it was not captured recently. I can see that now. My original intention was just to remove the colour so that it didn't distract from the shape and rhythm of the circle.
